Vastu Shastra for Home: A Room-by-Room Guide

Vastu Shastra for home is the traditional Indian system of arranging rooms by direction so that each space matches the element and purpose it’s associated with: the northeast for prayer, the southeast for the kitchen, the southwest for the master bedroom, and the centre kept open. You don’t need to rebuild your house to follow it. Most improvements come from placement and use.

The idea behind Vastu

Vastu links the eight directions and the centre to the five elements (earth, water, fire, air and space) and to presiding deities (Wikipedia). The aim is a home where light, air and activity flow in a sensible way: morning sun in the east, the heavy, stable areas in the southwest, fire in the southeast.

Room-by-room directions

Nine-zone Vastu plan showing the recommended room for each direction of a home

Northeast (Ishan) Pooja room, meditation, open space Water
East Living room, large windows, entrance Air/Sun
Southeast (Agni) Kitchen Fire
South Bedrooms, heavy storage Earth
Southwest (Nairutya) Master bedroom Earth
West Children’s room, dining, study Space/Water
Northwest (Vayavya) Guest room, storage, garage Air
North Living room, locker, cash Water
Centre (Brahmasthan) Keep open and clutter-free Space

Detailed guides: pooja room, kitchen, bedroom, main door and staircase.

Simple fixes without demolition

  • Declutter the northeast and the centre of the home.
  • Move heavy furniture to the south and west walls.
  • Sleep with your head to the south (see sleeping direction).
  • Keep the entrance clean and well lit.
  • Fix leaking taps, especially in the northeast and southeast.
  • Use the kitchen’s southeast corner for the stove if you can’t move the kitchen.

When a house doesn’t follow Vastu

Very few city flats follow every rule. That’s normal. A Vastu consultation should prioritise what matters most (entrance, kitchen, bedroom, centre) and suggest practical adjustments, not expensive reconstruction.

FAQ

Which direction is best for a house in Vastu?
East- and north-facing homes are traditionally preferred, but every direction can work with the right internal layout.

Can Vastu be applied to rented flats?
Yes. Most corrections involve placement, colours and use of space, not construction.

Which room should be in the northeast?
A pooja room, meditation space or open area. Avoid toilets and heavy storage there.

What is Brahmasthan?
The centre of the home, which Vastu says should stay open and uncluttered.
