Vimshottari Dasha: How the 120-Year Planetary Cycle Works

Vimshottari dasha is the main timing system in Vedic astrology: a 120-year cycle divided among nine planets, each ruling a period called a mahadasha, which begins from the planet that rules your birth nakshatra. To calculate your dasha you need your exact birth date, time and place, because the starting point depends on how far the Moon had travelled through its nakshatra.

Mahadasha lengths

Bar chart of mahadasha lengths: Venus 20, Saturn 19, Rahu 18, Mercury 17, Jupiter 16, Moon 10, Ketu 7, Mars 7, Sun 6 years

The sequence is always: Ketu (7) → Venus (20) → Sun (6) → Moon (10) → Mars (7) → Rahu (18) → Jupiter (16) → Saturn (19) → Mercury (17), totalling 120 years (Wikipedia).

How the starting dasha is found

  1. Find your birth nakshatra.
  2. Its ruling planet gives your first mahadasha.
  3. How much of the nakshatra the Moon had already crossed decides how much of that first dasha was “used up” before birth.

Example: if you were born with the Moon halfway through Rohini (ruled by the Moon), you’d start with about 5 of the Moon’s 10 years remaining.

Antardasha and pratyantar dasha

Each mahadasha is split into nine antardashas (sub-periods) in the same order, starting with the mahadasha planet itself. Each antardasha is split again into pratyantar dashas. Astrologers combine all three to time events precisely.

The length of an antardasha = (mahadasha years × antardasha planet’s years) ÷ 120.

How to read your dasha

A dasha brings forward what that planet represents in your chart:

  • The houses it rules
  • The house it sits in
  • Its strength and the planets it joins or aspects

So Saturn’s dasha can be excellent for one person and testing for another. Guides to specific dashas: Rahu, Ketu, Saturn, Jupiter, Venus.
