16 Oct Mangal Dosha: Meaning, Myths and Cancellation
Mangal Dosha (also called Manglik or Kuja Dosha) is the traditional condition in which Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the birth chart, believed to bring friction in marriage. It’s very common, it’s often cancelled by other factors, and it should never be judged from one rule alone.
Which houses cause Mangal Dosha

Mars in these houses (counted from the ascendant, and in many traditions also from the Moon and Venus):
- 1st: temperament and assertiveness
- 2nd: family harmony and speech
- 4th: domestic peace
- 7th: the spouse and partnership directly
- 8th: longevity of marriage and in-laws
- 12th: bed pleasures and expenses
Because six of twelve houses qualify, and some traditions check three reference points, a large share of people are technically Manglik.
Common cancellation rules
Traditional texts list many conditions that cancel or reduce the dosha. A few widely used ones:
- Both partners are Manglik. The doshas are considered to balance each other.
- Mars in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn).
- Jupiter’s aspect on Mars or the 7th house.
- Mars in specific signs for specific houses (for example, Mars in the 2nd in Gemini or Virgo in some traditions).
- Age: some traditions say the effect softens after about 28.
Different schools apply these differently, which is why I always check the full chart.
The myths
- “Manglik people shouldn’t marry non-Manglik people.” Not automatically. Cancellations and overall compatibility matter more.
- “Kumbh vivah or tree marriage is required.” These are traditional remedies some families choose. They’re not mandatory, and no one should be pressured into them.
- “Mangal Dosha means harm to the spouse.” That fear-based reading causes real distress and isn’t how a balanced astrologer reads a chart.
Practical remedies
- Recite the Hanuman Chalisa, especially on Tuesdays.
- Channel Mars energy into physical activity and discipline.
- Practise patience in arguments; Mars governs temper.
- For marriage, look at overall compatibility, not just the Manglik label.
