Navamsa Chart (D9): How to Read It for Marriage and Strength

The navamsa chart, also called the D9 chart, is a divisional chart made by dividing each zodiac sign into nine equal parts of 3°20′, and it’s used mainly to judge marriage, the spouse and the inner strength of planets. Many astrologers consider it the most important chart after the main birth chart (D1).

How the navamsa is calculated

Each 30° sign is split into nine parts of 3°20′. Each part maps to a sign in the navamsa chart. Since each nakshatra pada is also 3°20′, there’s a direct link between your nakshatra padas and your D9 chart.

You need an accurate birth time; the D9 ascendant changes about every 13 minutes on average.

What the navamsa shows

  • Marriage and spouse: the D9 7th house, its lord, Venus and Jupiter.
  • Planetary strength: a planet weak in D1 but strong in D9 often performs better than expected, and the reverse.
  • The second half of life: many traditions say the D9 becomes more visible after marriage or middle age.
  • Dharma: the word navamsa links to the 9th, the house of dharma and fortune.

Reading it step by step

Five steps to read a navamsa D9 chart for marriage and planetary strength

  1. D9 ascendant and its lord. Its strength colours the whole chart.
  2. The 7th house in D9. Planets here and the 7th lord describe the spouse and the marriage.
  3. Compare D1 and D9 signs for each planet. Exalted or in its own sign in D9 = stronger.
  4. Vargottama planets. When a planet is in the same sign in D1 and D9, it’s called vargottama and considered strengthened.
  5. Venus and Jupiter. Key indicators for relationships and, traditionally, for husband (Jupiter) and wife (Venus).

D9 and marriage timing

The navamsa tells you about the marriage; the dasha tells you when. I combine the D9 with the 7th house of the main chart and the running Vimshottari dasha.

FAQ

What is a D9 chart?
The navamsa chart: a divisional chart dividing each sign into nine parts, used for marriage and planetary strength.

Is the navamsa more important than the birth chart?
No. The birth chart (D1) is primary. The navamsa refines and confirms it.

What does vargottama mean?
A planet in the same sign in both the D1 and D9 charts, considered strengthened.

Why does birth time matter for D9?
Because each division is only 3°20′, a small time error can change the D9 ascendant.
